New Lyrics for Old Hymn Tunes

For those of you who are looking for something new and different in hymns for congregational singing I hope to provide challenging and faith-based new lyrics for some of the beautiful old hymn tunes we love but that seem to be falling into disuse because the lyrics historically associated with them are "dated" enough to be less meaningful than they were at the time they were written.

Certainly no one would wish to denigrate the effectiveness of the old lyrics for their time; however, times, lives, and our social concerns have certainly changed and the English language is a living thing that changes and adapts quite rapidly.

In addition, I have found some melodies still very much in use that cry out to me with different words.  Many of our best-loved hymn tunes have given birth to multiple sets of lyrics.

Although our expressions of worship, our language, and our social interactions have changed over the years the basic tenets of our faith remain the same. Jesus Christ is Lord and our redemption and salvation rest in Him.

I began by drawing exclusively on "The Cyber Hymnal" for the melodies I have used and to it I am deeply indebted.  Now I have found another very useful resource at "Christian Classics Ethereal Hymnary" that offers some different melodies, but no lyrics.  Occasionally I have been able to find the metre I need on one of these sites only, but what a wealth of music they provide between them.

As of today I have eighteen sets of new lyrics to share, as linked in the list on the left.

Each song is available as a printable score with lyrics in 8 1/2" x 11" in PDF format, or as a 2-up PDF suitable for inclusion in your order of service, or a large high resolution PNG suitable for printing. I will also provide a link to a MIDI file for each tune in case you are like me and not musician enough to play the score for yourself but need to actually hear it.

May God bless, keep and use you,

Lift up your hearts in song; praise Him with your voices!
