I Called You Friend

To Walter,
I called you friend, because
your eyes spoke volumes:
of humour,
of warmth,
and of compassion.
I called you friend, because
your voice reached out:
with gentleness,
with understanding,
and with welcome.
I called you friend, because
your mind searched for:
new ideas,
new challenges,
and new debates.
I called you friend, because
your heart centered on:
your wife,
your daughters,
and your faith.
I called you friend, because
your life was built on:
personal integrity,
a sense of justice,
and concern for others.
Today I still call you friend,
secure in the knowledge
that our friendship will continue
when I too, pass through that gate.

This one was written on receiving the news of the sudden passing of a good friend, Walter Mollins, in Stratford, Ontario.
Bettie Mollins and her daughters, Lyndsay and Kellie, had it read at Walter’s memorial service and then graciously sent me an audio recording of the service.
