Special People—For Owen McLean

Sometimes the world is blessed
With people who bring unexplainable goodness
In spite of, or maybe because of,
The difficult journey they face in life.

Bodies making living a challenge unfair,
Their spirit and grit make each as we meet them
Stop and think of how fortunate we are
To be healthy and whole as we go on our way.

But even more, as their joy shines out
At each simple pleasure that comes their way,
At the love, seemingly boundless, they so freely give,
Their example simply shows us how to live
With more awareness of others, more willing to give.

Their simple trust earns a place in our hearts
That swells and grows and true peace imparts;
That, at the end of their journey,
Allows us to stand in a world made better
By their presence here.

We can not but miss them
For days and nights we have shared;
But we know that they’ve made us
Better, and stronger, more humane and kind,
As they’ve gone on and left us behind.

This was written as a note to Barb and Doug McLean following the death of their son Owen in spite of, or maybe because of his multiple physical problems touched the hearts and spirits of many.  May 29, 2009
